What Can You Put in a Dumpster?
Most household and construction debris goes in a dumpster without issue. But some items are restricted or banned entirely. Here's what you need to know.
Generally Accepted
- Household junk and furniture
- Construction debris (drywall, lumber, siding)
- Yard waste (branches, dirt, sod)
- Roofing shingles
- Concrete, brick, and block (check weight limits)
- Appliances (without refrigerants)
- Flooring materials
Prohibited Items (Never Goes in a Dumpster)
- Hazardous chemicals, solvents, paints
- Asbestos and lead paint
- Batteries (car, lithium, etc.)
- Tires
- Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil)
- Medical and biological waste
- Electronics (in some states)
- Refrigerators, AC units (unless freon is removed)
Heavy Materials Warning
Concrete, dirt, and roofing shingles are heavy. Most dumpsters have a weight limit (typically 2-6 tons depending on size). Exceeding the weight limit results in overage fees, usually $40-$100 per extra ton. If you're disposing of heavy material, ask your provider about weight limits before delivery.
